Christmas came early here at BirdLife South Africa when we opened our Argos platform to see that Hera is finally back in South Africa!
After nine months and a staggering journey of over 25,000km, Hera has returned to South African soil! While she’s arrived during a sweltering heatwave, we’re excited to track her movements in the coming months.
Interestingly, Hera hasn’t returned to the exact area where we first trapped her (red line). This raises fascinating questions about site fidelity during their overwintering periods – something we still know very little about.
Red line – Hera’s spring migration (30 March 2024 – 30 July 2024)
Yellow line – Hera’s autumn migration (01 August 2024 – present)
