Large Terrestrial Birds currently make up 15% of the threatened bird species in South Africa. This group includes species such as the regionally Critically Endangered Wattled Crane, Endangered Ludwig’s Bustard and Southern Ground-Hornbill, as well as the Vulnerable Black Stork.

These birds face a reange of threats from habitat loss and destruction, to collisions with power infrastructure, and persecution for the wildlife trade. The Terrestrial Bird Conservation Programme is working to ensure that these giants of the South African landscape continue to thrive long into the future.
