The arid birds project is focused on initiating and implementing conservation initiatives on threatened species inhabiting the arid and semi-arid environments of South Africa and southern Namibia.

Owing to the specialised nature of species inhabiting this trying landscape, this often results in them being range restricted and endemic to these parts of Southern Africa. Focal species currently range from small passerines such as Vulnerable Red Lark through to Endangered Ludwig’s Bustard. The aims of this project are to initiate species specific research projects that can inform conservation measures required, develop species specific projects and actions that address prevalent threats and develop a conservation network that incorporates as many of these species as possible within formally protected areas.
