BirdLife South Africa's projects and field staff are often in need of equipment, skills or resources that can enhance their work or enable them to achieve more in the field.

If you are able to assist with any of the needs/wish list below, please contact us. Your support and donations can make a huge difference to our work in "giving conservation wings!"

Our Guide Training and Development programme is in need of a new copy of Roberts Birds of Southern Africa which can be used by guides on training in Wakkerstroom. Our guide training mobile library currently does not have a copy of this book. All other field guides, birds and other biodata are also always welcome and can be put to extremely good use in a variety of projects. Our Training programme also needs the following:

  • Data projector
  • Volunteer guest lecturers for guide training courses
  • Volunteer materials writers (drafting training materials, needs to have an educational background)
  • Any offers of administrative assistance in managing the guide training administration.
  • PDAs or mini CD players for community guides to use in learning bird calls.

The Albatross Task Force which focuses on mitigating the impact on seabirds caused by the fishing industry is in need of the following:

  • A volunteer to spend time capturing archival data on seabird counts from cards and into a database. Could work from home or at University of Cape Town.
  • Filing cabinets for their new offices in Cape Town.
  • A professional mechanic who can provide services and work on the task force vehicles.

The Wakkerstroom Centre is one of BirdLife South Africa's flagship projects. The centre plays a critical role in community development in the area, guide training and monitoring of the wetland. However the centre is in desperate need of a makeover and any materials such as paint, furniture etc... are welcomed. We specifically need

  • New mattresses and beds for the training dormitory
  • Furniture, mats etc... for the guides suites

BirdLife South Africa is also constantly in need of laptops and data projectors for our field staff to undertake their work more efficiently. Any equipment will make a significant difference to their day to day operations.
