Events - Save our Seabirds Festival 2009


This year we are running a very exciting, action packed week of activities aimed at highlighting some of the great work being done in seabird conservation in South Africa. This week also aims to raise money for future seabird research to be conducted through the Percy Fitzpatrick Institute. This week will run in conjunction with National Marine Week: 12 – 18 October 2009.

The highlights of the week include:

  • Monday – Wednesday evenings: Cheese and wine evenings with prominent speakers within the conservation fields. Time: 18h30 for 19h00. Entrance is FREE. Venue: Two Oceans Aquarium, Cape Town. Monday: Peter Steyn: "Antarctic Impressions" (including book signing). FULLY BOOKED! Tuesday: Prof. Les Underhill: "The secret lives of Langebaan's waders". Wednesday: Prof George Branch: "Seabirds as key contributors to marine eco-systems" (including book signing).  
  • Adopt a school: During this week one of the schools in Hout Bay, Kronendal Primary School, will be adopted and seabird lessons and awareness of conservation will be taught throughout the week to learners in Grade 1 to 5. Representatives from BLSA and SANCCOB will be presenting these lessons.

  • Robben Island boat trip and Island tour: On Saturday and sunday, there will be an opportunity for those interested in seeing the ecological side of Robben Island and he birds it has to offer, to get a place on board the Robben Island Ferry. There will be guides who will provide more information on island conservation, as well as the birds you ay encounter. Time: 08h30, returning on the 12h00 ferry. Cost: R180pp, only 20 spaces per day available. This will not include the Cultural Tour of the island. FULLY BOOKED!

  • Pelagic Boat Trip: 'In search of the sooty albatross'. Deaprting from the V&A Waterfront, Cape Town at 23h00, this two day cruise promises to be a once in a life time opportunity! Provisional cost: R7 500 per person, booking essential as only 10 spaces are available! FULLY BOOKED!

  • Gala event: This will take place at the Two Oceans Aquarium on friday night and will be FREE. Booking is ESSENTIAL for this finger snack and wine event. An short  talk will be given by Dr. Ross Wanless of the Global Seabird Programme. Time:  18h30 for 19h00. Venue: Two Oceans Aquarium Shark Tank! A number of BLSA seabird initiatives will be launched at the event, as well as some lucky draw prizes, the announcement of the winner of the Seabird Photographic Competition and the Owl Award presentation. FULLY BOOKED!

  • Photographic competition: Members of the public were invited to submit their best photographs of coastal and pelagic seabirds to photocompetition@birdlife.org.za by 25 September 2009. These photographs were judged and a selection of finalists chosen. These finalists have been put onto an online competition/auction on www.bidorbuy.co.za. These photographs can be viewed on http://www.bidorbuy.co.za/seller/1430767/BirdLife.  The finalists’ photographs will also be displayed in the Two Oceans Aquarium during the Save Our Seabirds week for viewing. The competition will have two winners: one voted on popularity from the Two Oceans viewing and one auctioned for the highest bid on the online auction site.
