NGO Coalition aims to set benchmark for coal mining best practice

The coalition of civil society organisations challenging the authorisations given to mining company Limpopo Coal (Pty) Ltd’s proposed Vele colliery outside the Mapungubwe National Park and World Heritage Site, has resolved to commence direct formal negotiations with Limpopo Coal and its holding company Coal of Africa (CoAL).

Barn Swallow migration patterns on the move

Swallows, delicate birds which breed in Europe and migrate to Africa for the northern winter, have been the subject of lyrical folklore in many cultures of South Africa, as well as the nickname for Europeans who spend the cold northern months in southern Africa. A new paper in the top Royal Society journal, “Proceedings of the Royal Society B,” looks in detail at how the timing of migration in three regions of South Africa is changing with the climate.

Response to uplifitment of the suspension of the Vele Water Use Licence

The NGO Coalition views the Minister of Water and Environmental Affairs’ decision to uplift the suspension of the Vele water use licence as very worrying. We also regard the Minister’s decision as premature, since her own Department has not even given written reasons for its decision to issue the water use licence in the first place.
