Askham

Kameelboomkoelte Chalets is situated in the heart of the famous ‘Kalahari Red Dune Route’ of the Southern Kalahari and is the result of a dream created by Erick and Nina Meyer.

In the tiny, friendly town of Askham, which is 180km North of Upington and 75km south of the Twee Rivieren Main gate of Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, is a perfect stay over for adventurous travellers, with many interesting attractions nearby.

Kameelboomkoelte offers accommodation in seven fully equipped, self-catering open plan, air-conditioned units/chalets (sleep 24 people) with braai (barbeque) facilities. Cool off in the large sparkling blue pool, soaking up the sun or simply lazing around. Kameelboomkoelte has a wheelchair-friendly Unit (Sleeps only 2) and Diamond T Coffee Shop is within walking distance for meals and curios. All meals can be served on site by arrangement.

We are surrounded by farms where we have permission for guided birding tours on foot or by vehicle. According to SABAP2, 68 birds had been reported in Askham including Lappet-faced and White-backed Vultures, Brown Snake-eagle, Rock Kestrel, Pygmy Falcon, Swallow-tailed Bee-eater, Lark-like Bunting, Black- and White-throated Canaries as well as various Owls and Goshawks.

Driven by a love for nature, PC and his family accepted the responsibility to conserve and protect the land that was entrusted to them. Now after three generations of traditional Karoo sheep farming, they would like to invite you to share with them the beauty and tranquillity of the Karoo Gariep Nature Reserve(established 2015). They intend to share the hidden treasures of this arid landscape, and their way of living with you and to create an opportunity for you to experience the Karoo as their special friend.

  • Karoo Gariep tent camp (sleep 12)
  • Stoffels Rus self-catering cabin (sleep 4)

At Karoo Gariep Nature reserve we offer a variety of activities, from bird watching, night drives, a 3 day horse trail, fishing and mountain biking. Come and enjoy the finest the Karoo has to offer. To date the Karoo Gariep Nature Reserve sports an impressive 205 bird species recorded. Do a self-drive trip or book an early morning drive with PC at new Holme.
