Field and Stream lies 9 km out of Dullstroom on the Steenkampsberg Plateau in Mpumalanga. Situated in the grasslands, the farm is an ideal getaway for those wishing to enjoy the peace and quiet of a farm, whilst exploring its many treasures on foot or by mountain bike. The farm’s five streams, Witpoort River, and three waterfalls provide a host of opportunities for bird watching walks, swims and picnics. With a host of grassland bird species, bird watching is a treat whether sitting on the verandah of your accommodation unit or walking or mountain biking across the farm. A bird list is also available for the farm. Of particular note though are the following:
• A Bald Ibis colony at the waterfall below the second dam.
• A Black Eagle can be seen periodically along the river.
• A pair of Blue Cranes visits the farm annually between August and January.
• A breeding pair of Cape Eagle Owls are sometimes seen in front of the Lodge at night.
• Gurney’s Sugarbird can be seen in the Protea savanna toward the end of summer.

  • Fly fishing
  • Walking/hiking
  • Mountain biking
  • Horse riding
  • Wingers Bush Bar and Field and Stream Clay Pigeon Shooting Range

Sabie Sand Game Reserve

Renowned for its Big Five game viewing, the 65 000ha Sabi Sand Game Reserve – within which Cheetah Plains Private Game reserve is located – lies adjacent to the south-west corner of The Kruger National Park, where it shares a 50km border. There are no fences between the two reserves, allowing game to move freely between the two areas and as a result, the reserve offers some of the most exceptional wildlife in southern Africa.

Two rivers cross Sabi Sand – the Sabi River on its boundary in the south and the Sand River that flows from North-West to South-East. This has resulted in an abundance of leopard, lion, rhino, elephant, buffalo, cheetah, zebra, giraffe, hyena and a wide variety of antelope and other species.

To date 330 tree, 45 fish, 30 amphibian, 110 reptile, 400 bird and 145 mammal species have been noted in Sabi Sand. A number of endangered species have also made the reserve their home, and visitors to the area are often given a rare glimpse of bats, honey badgers, ground hornbills and wild dogs.

Cheetah Plains is one of the oldest bush camps in the Sabi Sand. Accommodation consists of eight rooms & a Bush Cottage. Our emphasis is on offering guests traditional Safari values of comfortable accommodation, combined with great food, prepared around the campfire.

We also have specialised birding safaris hosted and guided by a specialist African birder and ornithologist with assistance of Cheetah Plains Private Game Reserve guides. Martin Benadie is also a passionate bird photographer so these safaris are also ideal for those wanting to spend a bit more time photographing these often frustrating subjects. Participants will be given detailed bird and mammal species checklists which will be completed daily after dinner.

It is well known for its excellent cuisine, relaxed homely atmosphere and personal service, with a swimming pool, prolific birding and exhilarating walks. Experience harmony and tranquillity at Old Joe’s.

Accommodation is offered in Log Cabins, Rondavels and Kaia Rooms. Each of these units has a different theme and is uniquely decorated accordingly. All units have a balcony /veranda and private bathroom en suite (bath and shower).

A highlight for most visitors are the scrumptious meals enjoyed on the balcony of the main building. A beautiful mountain view and birdsong add to the pleasure of the experience. The kitchen produces creative and nutritious meals, using organically home-grown vegetables and herbs and as much free-range produce as possible. Passers-by are welcome to drop in for a meal en route to the Kruger National Park, Mozambique, Swaziland, the Panorama Route or the Lowveld.

Lovely walks along the Crocodile River reward the keen birder with interesting sightings. A trained bird guide is available to assist in bird identification and to point out some elusive species. For those who prefer to admire the beauty of the valley on wheels can do so on mountain bicycles which are available for rent. The latest addition to Old Joe’s Kaia is a magnificent labyrinth. Guests in need of self-time, reflection and tranquillity can stroll along its path in search of inner peace.

Who was Old Joe?

Look out for this famous painted rock as you come down Patatanek Pass on your trip from Johannesburg (± 35 km from the Machado toll gate). Old Joe is in reality resembling a person with a big belly. Road constructors working on the Schoemanskloof road found and erected this rock in 1927, naming it after their foreman Joe Barbas and “Old Joe” was born. The statue still features prominently in tourist literature and is painted regularly by local schools and residents, changing its ‘outfit’ and image to the delight of passers-by!
