Tamboti Bush Lodge is in the middle of the Dinokeng Game Reserve. The only big 5 game reserve in Gauteng. The area is malaria free and is only one hours drive from Johannesburg. The N1 Highway takes you to just 6 kms from the game reserve gates and 10 kms from Tamboti Bush Lodge.

Tamboti Bush lodge is nestled in a grove of Tamboti trees. The 6 suites at the lodge are stunning, each with their own décor and style. The honeymoon suites are to die for, there two log cabins overlooking the dams and the luxury safari tent amazing. All the suites have a TV and coffee making facilities for the late-nighter / early bird.

Dinokeng is one of South Africa’s prime bird watching areas. The close proximity of water, grassland and bushveld habitats attract a wide variety of birds in a relatively small area. The birdwatching is absolutely free at Tamboti Bush Lodge, we have 85 different indigenous trees plus an orchard of fruit trees and two dams so we have huge varieties of birds at the lodge. At the lodge the owners have planted Tecoma plants around the restaurant to specifically attract varieties of sunbirds. The garden at the lodge also has a large area of lawns and areas of grasses that have been left to go to seed specifically to attract seed-eaters. A Tamboti forest inside the lodge periphery also attracts it own varieties of birds. Visitors to the lodge can almost be guaranteed to be greeted by at least one if not more than one Crimson Breasted Shrike.

Proximity to Zaagkuildrift road and Kgomo Kgomo makes Tamboti Bush Lodge an ideal base for birders in the area as well as being very close to Rust de Winter Dam, an ideal opportunity to see many of the waterfowl the area has to offer. To ensure that birders never go hungry Tamboti Bush Lodge has an excellent restaurant and lunch packs can be arranged for that long day in the bush. We at Tamboti Bush Lodge are dedicated to make your bird viewing a wonderful experience.

Johannesburg

2 Mokolois central Johannesburg’s first BirdLife SA accredited birder-friendly establishment, catering to the needs of birders, twitchers, or the common or garden bird-mad enthusiast spending time in Gauteng. Should you find yourself in the big city on business or in transit, don’t miss out on the must-see birds the province has to offer. Welcome to 2 Mokolo – your birding base for Gauteng.

Our tranquil grounds offer an intimate respite from the hustle of the city; it’s hard to believe you’re a mere 4.5km from the heart of busy Sandton. The house embraces a Highveld ‘koppie’, set amid a rambling array of indigenous trees and plants. Bird life is found in profusion here: a breeding pair of Cape Glossy Starlings protect their turf from the marauding Burchells’ Coucal, while the leisurely preening of the doves is disturbed by a Little Sparrowhawk swooping in for the kill.

A private glass door leads from your bedroom directly into the peaceful garden, where you can relax under a natural canopy of wild olive and white stinkwood. Just 50 metres from our front gates in a quiet, well-established neighbourhood, you’ll find the Outspan Bird Sanctuary. A wander here will present you with an even greater variety of bird life. All this, and yet you are just a few kilometres from all major access roads and conveniently close to the main highways, putting you within reach of Gauteng’s premier birding areas.

Despite its status as South Africa’s smallest province, Gauteng enjoys an impressive diversity of birds thanks to its position on the cusp of the Highveld Grassland and the Bushveld Savanna. In addition to these biomes, Gauteng is influenced in the west by the drier Kalahari Sandveld, and in the east by the sub-tropical Lowveld woodland creeping in along the rivers. Its capital, Johannesburg, has been transformed from Highveld grassland into the world’s largest man-made forest, with over 10 million trees. This accounts for previously out-of-range birds (not to mention some rare and exotic humans) flocking to make it their home. In addition to these varied habitats, there are many wetlands and ephemeral pans creating suitable terrain and hence even more diversity. With 2 Mokolo as your base, we can facilitate guided birding trips in and around Gauteng.

Johannesburg and its surrounding areas are also rich in history, both natural and man-made. From the first origins of our species at the Cradle of Humankind, to the evils of supposedly civilized society as witnessed in the Apartheid Museum, you’ll find an array of rich experiences awaiting you here. Let us make your stay even more memorable by facilitating day trips that take in the province’s historical and cultural sites.

Beneath the veneer of civilization, vestiges of wild and untamed Africa remain. Adventure is there for the taking if you dare…

  • Drift silently over the mountains on a Balloon Safari
  • Bunjee off the Orlando Cooling Towers
  • Interact with the largest animal on land at the Elephant Sanctuary
  • Experience majestic cats up close at the De Wildt Cheetah Centre
  • See two stars of Africa’s Big Five at the Lion & Rhino Park
