With the drought continuing unabated over many parts of our country BirdLife South Africa, in partnership with Rand Water (Water Wise), Joburg City Parks and Zoo (JCPZ), the Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA) and the Rare Finch Conservation Group (RFCG), is continuing its efforts to raise awareness of the importance to save water, wetlands and waterbirds.

Now in its fourth year, the Flufftail Festival is undergoing a facelift, with an exciting new venue centred on the Johannesburg Zoo. In an effort to bring our message to as many young faces as possible, Friday, 1 June 2018, will be devoted exclusively to grade six learners, who will be bused in from participating schools in the Soweto area. At the zoo they will be guided along a route that will provide plenty of opportunity to learn about the importance of wetlands, the creatures that live in them and, most importantly, how to protect them. Various fun activities are planned, including the return of the RFCG’s much-loved puppet show, where Waxi the Hero will continue in his efforts to find Fluffy, one of the rarest birds in the wetland.

Previously, on Saturday, 21 April, the Flufftail Festival opened its doors and welcomed anyone, including the young and the young at heart, to take part in this learning experience.

We hope to see you there.
