The conference precedes Flock 2012, BirdLife South Africa’s AGM and is co-organised by BirdLife South Africa and the Percy FitzPatrick Institute of African Ornithology, with a special emphasis on showcasing cutting-edge student research. Birdwatchers, citizen scientists and conservationists are encouraged to attend, as this conference is not only aimed at the professional ornithologist.
Invited speakers include Professor Andrew McKechnie on climate change implications for bird conservation in South Africa, and Dr Mandy Ridley on Southern Pied Babbler sociobiology.

Ecosystem Services. Do we need birds?

The conference will consolidate our understanding of the ecosystem services provided by birds and showcase current research into the importance of birds in ecosystem functioning. It will also explore the cultural services that birds provide and consider how Government and non-Governmental organisations are engaging with this new approach in policy. Debating the philosophical and practical problems surrounding the ecosystem services approach will be a key feature of the conference, as well as finding new opportunities for bird conservation.

The Pan-African Ornithological Congress (PAOC) takes place every 4 years and its aims and purpose are to:
(a) Further the study of African birds
(b) Promote the preservation of African birds as an integral part of the African heritage
(c) Foster the appreciation of birds and discussion of African birds in relation to man, and
(d) Disseminate information on African birds through appropriate international meetings (Congresses) and publications (Proceedings of the Congresses).
The previous congress took place on 7-12 September 2008 in Rawsonville, South Africa (see details including proceedings at http://paoc12.adu.org.za/)
