BirdLife South Africa and the Safeguard our Seabed Coalition
In 2012 and 2014 the Department of Mineral Resources granted three prospecting rights to private companies to prospect for phosphate in South Africa’s Exclusive Economic Zone.
In 2015 BirdLife South Africa was invited by the Centre for Environmental Rights to join a group of organisations with a common interest in protecting the marine environment from marine mining. This coalition is called the Safeguard our Seabed Coalition and includes organisations that represent the interests of commercial and small scale fishing, organized labour, and environmental conservation. The long-term goal of the Coalition is to maintain the ecological integrity of South Africa’s offshore marine habitats through pursuing a moratorium on bulk marine sediment mining, until such a time that more information on the environmental and socio-economic impacts of such mining becomes available.
