Climate Action Partnership (CAP)

CAP is a powerful alliance of South African environmental NGO's working to raise awareness about the effects of climate change in South Africa and taking active steps to slow and limit its impact. CAP aims to reduce the impacts of climate change and increase the resilience of South Africa's biodiversity and communities by promoting intact ecosystems that are connected at a landscape level, building human capacity and implementing climate change adaptation and mitigation.

UG

Meet Ug

Ug is CAP's green champion, campaigning for the future of our planet. Join Ug every week and learn about climate change and what you can do to help secure the future of our planet.

Ug is doing what we should all be doing: learning about how we impact the earth, sharing it with others, and taking personal action. Ug is a mascot for CAP and through the distribution and publication of the Ug cartoons and activity pages, it is hoped that Ug will give children and adults a little more information on our changing planet and how we can make sure it stays a living one!

Ug on... Climate Change and Biodiversity Hotspots

Ug_Succ_Karoo_extinct

The Succulent Karoo is one of three Biodiversity Hotspots in South Africa and one of 34 on the planet. Biodiversity Hotspots are the 'richest and most threatened reservoirs of plant and animal life on Earth.' (www.biodiversityhotspots.org). The Succulent Karoo has an exceptionally high plant endemism – which means many of the plants found here cannot be found anywhere else in the world! Primarily winter-rainfall desert, the region is dominated by leaf succulents which are drought-adapted plants, having thick, fleshy leaves or stems used for storing of water. There are also many kinds of lizards, tortoises and scorpions found there. Despite the relatively low population density of this region, grazing, mining and agriculture are threatening its survival. Biodiversity is the variety of life, and the foundation of human well-being, so it's in our interest to protect it. Try to find out more about a hotspot near you and support the NGO's doing work in these areas: The Succulent Karoo and the Cape Floristic Region are found in the west of the country and the Maputaland-Pondoland-Albany hotspot is found on the eastern coastline.
