Hosting Events

The Events Programme over the past 12 months was as versatile as ever and new twists to familiar themes proved to be very popular.

On behalf of everyone at BirdLife South Africa, I'd like to say a big thank you to everyone who supported our Events Programme for making this year a great one. With 2016 drawing to a close, it's always nice to look back and reflect on the year gone by.

The African Bird Fair was definitely the climax of 2016 for me. After many months of hard work and planning, it was fabulous to see everything come together. The Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden was a magnet for birders over the two days and this year's Bird Fair was the best attended to date. We hope to continue to make it bigger and better with each year.

The Owl Awards proved that variety is the spice of life! Trying something a little different turned out to be a big hit as we took things outdoors this year and gave our guests the opportunity to enjoy the beauty of Beechwood Gardens.

In November we held an art exhibition at Isdell House that brought together a very special collection of bird art from across South Africa. The event proved to be successful, with 29 pieces of art being sold on the opening night. We were delighted not only to have awakened or rekindled a love for bird art among our supporters, but also to have raised funds, as a portion of the proceeds were donated to BirdLife South Africa.

Uniting people through their passions and inspiring them to get involved and make positive changes for birds and our environment is what my job is all about. I'd like to thank everyone who has contributed to the success of our events throughout 2016.

I wish all our supporters a wonderful December and look forward to seeing you again in 2017!
